England’s oldest opera is being performed in Louisville. The School of Music and Opera Theater at U of L will perform Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas.” The historic opera is thought to have been a celebration to mark the coronation of William III and Mary II to the English monarchy. The opera was first performed in 1689 and is based on the romance between Dido, legendary Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, the Trojan refugee from the fourth book of Virgil’s “Aeneid.” Not only is the tragic opera England’s oldest, it is the only true opera by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell. There is limited seating. —Jonathan Ashley
