For a couple of years now, Truth B. Told (Christopher Owens) has been dotting Louisville’s spoken word scene at just about every poetry spot available. Going from the personal to political, he’s been a well-known tongue twister. He’s releasing a debut album, Lyrical Therapy, Volume One, and Friday he will be joined by the Mic Check band performing live pieces from the much-anticipated record.
Lyrical Therapy is the first in a two-part project to be completed later this year, he says. Owens hopes the first volume will introduce listeners to what’s been a steady underground career of spoken word/hip hop that touches on every subject under the sun, often with a local perspective that keeps him from being a copycat. In typical fashion, he promises surprise guest appearances. It wouldn’t be Derby season without those, right? —Phillip M. Bailey
