The Republic Bank Pegasus Parade (what’s not sponsored by something or other these days?) drew more than a quarter-million people last year, under dreary skies and a biting wind. Imagine what the two-week Derby Festival’s founding event — © 1956 — might pull this time, given some cooperation from Mother Nature.
Sure, this event is, at its core, a collection of funny-dressed people, slow-moving vehicles decorated in all manner of Derbytime regalia, massive inflatable horses and marching bands, including U of L’s, moving down a major thoroughfare with impressive coherence. But it’s also a classic mood-setter for The Biggest Party in Sports, and, well, give yourself over to it and have some fun. Maybe bring the kids. Or grandkids. People seem to love it, and it generates some $14 million in local spending. Get there. —Stephen George
