Reflecting the stories of destitute people he met and the contrast of wealth in America, artist Emil Walton’s solo show “Autonomous” was inspired by a recent trip to Africa. Although there is homelessness and poverty, increasing daily, the level of need in America is different. Using shapes of Africa and colors of patriotism, Walton’s paintings have a decidedly political bent. With black stencil-style letters spelling out cryptic messages, the intention is clearly provocative. Underneath the controversial topic, the artisanship is simple but well done. A high recommendation for people who like to think with their art. —Erica Lawson
