While Jason Wilber may have cut his teeth as an axe-man for John Prine, the Bloomington singer has blazed his own trail of indie rock energy. The countrified influence of Prine can be found throughout Wilber’s new album King for a Day, but the record on the whole is closer to the reckless abandon of Pete Yorn and Ryan Adams, at least on their brighter days. You can’t help but enjoy Wilber’s penchant for songwriting that is both catchy and engrossing. The meditative “In Her Veins” springs forward with naked emotional honestly while “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Tin Angels” jump with vibrant intensity. If you’re looking for a good album to drive and ponder to, Wilber’s latest will fill the indie rock void in your heart. —Dennis O’Neil
