John Waters didn’t know what he was starting. His film “Hairspray” hit screens in 1988 and has since given birth to a Broadway musical that won eight Tony awards and a 2007 film adaptation starring John Travolta in drag (lucky us). Now, Music Theater Louisville is picking up the ball and will be running a production of the beloved musical through early August. Badass, eh?
“Hairspray” follows Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with a heart of gold, on her quest for dance stardom in early ’50s Baltimore. After winning a spot on the local showcase “The Corny Collins Show,” she sets out to unseat the program’s reigning dance princess and win the attention of hunk Link Larkin, all while busting out award-winning numbers like “Good Morning, Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” —Dennis O’Neil
