21c’s latest exhibit explores the power of the portrait, one of the oldest forms of representation. “Creating Identity: Portraits Today” features more than 60 pieces by both emerging and established artists, including work by Louisvillians Chris Radke and Gaela Erwin.
“With the onslaught of media imagery, we are losing our identities,” says 21c Museum director William Morrow. “Portraiture is increasingly important in contemporary art. Artists explore themes such as individual identity, art history, social inequalities, history and politics and can therefore show us who we are and how we feel about who we are — our identities.” —Sara Havens
