Both authors have become favorites here in Kentucky, for a short reading and informal discussion of their writing careers. Longtime Courier-Journal columnist Bob Hill is the author of “Double Jeopardy,” “Stone Walls” and “River Music,” and the new history of Centre College, “Our Standard Sure.” Berea resident Jim Tomlinson has written the award-winning short story collectionsThings Kept, Things Left Behind” and “Nothing Like an Ocean.” What you might not know is that they both started out decades ago as classmates at the same small-town Illinois high school. Though they traveled different roads–one through the halls of academia and one through an on-the-go apprenticeship in journalism–they’ve both forged satisfying and successful writing careers.
