Paintings and drawings by Janis Kirstein are at Zephyr Gallery, 610 E. Market St., 585-5646 from July 2-Aug. 14. The opening reception is during the July 2 First Friday Trolley Hop with another opening on Aug. 6 from 6-9 p.m.
“I created the small drawings in this exhibition while lying down in my bed flat on my back,” Kirstein explains, “the only position I could find that wasn’t unbearably painful. These pieces emerged as automatic writing / drawing from my subconscious mind, generating pictographic portents of the journey I was about to encounter in the upcoming months. I felt much like the Mexican painter Frieda Kahlo.”
