Love ’em or hate ’em, Louisville has the largest concentration of shotgun houses in the country. Unfortunately, many are in disrepair, forcing Preservation Louisville to place the shotgun house on its “Top 10 Most Endangered Historic Places List.” As part of National Preservation Month, Preservation Louisville has rolled out the program “Preservation S.O.S.: Save Our Shotguns.” Its mission is two-fold — to educate Louisville about the history of this housing style and to select one house for exterior renovation. The selected shotgun will receive a lot of attention from Preservation Louisville. They will provide labor and materials as well as teach the owner about history and maintenance. If you own a shotgun and wish to be considered for S.O.S., visit the Preservation Louisville website for details and an application. —Jo Anne Triplett
