The Academy Award nominated documentary “Sun Come Up” (2011,) follows the people of the Carteret Islands, whose ancestral land in the South Pacific is projected to be entirely under water by 2015. Considered by many to be our planet’s first “environmental refugees,” the Carteret Islanders are left with little choice but to paddle the 50 miles to Bougainville, a less peaceful region still recovering from an on-again/off-again civil war that raged from the 1970’s and into the late 90’s. Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light, a climate-focused congregation that aims to “connect theology with ecology,” will present the screening. Some of KIPL’s initiatives include a program to help area churches obtain solar panels, Greening West Louisville and participation in the National Preach-In on Global Warming in February. —J.
