“Absinthe to Acid: Posters” lecture at Local Speed

The Speed Art Museum at Local Speed, 822 E. Market St., is presenting a lecture on “Absinthe to Acid: Posters” by U of L professor Steven Skaggs on Friday, May 23 at 6 p.m. Free and open to the public.

French posters, like those on display in “Art of the Streets: The French Poster, 1880-1930,” were produced at the end of an era which was soon to give way to more radical use of space. This style re-emerges as an ironic motif in the San Francisco “acid” posters of the 60s. Using images of posters from the San Francisco poster collection of artist Keith Kleespies, Skaggs will explore the connotations these posters must have had for their original audience and how that was twisted and replayed 80 years later.
