In my home, BB guns, leg lamps and tongues stuck to frozen poles were synonymous with mistletoe, candy canes and Santa Claus in indicating Christmas was near. Our TV was tuned to “A Christmas Story” whenever it was on, and we thanked the cable programming gods who decided to run it 24/7 on Christmas Eve.

Actors Theatre is bringing the theatrical version of the Jean Shepherd film to its Pamela Brown Auditorium this November. The production, just like the film, follows young Ralphie’s campaign for a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas amid seasonal mayhem. Admit it, your family and mine are a bit more “A Christmas Story” than “It’s A Wonderful Life,” which is probably why we love it so. —Sara Havens
