Tom C. McKenney will visit The Filson to tell the story of Jack Hinson from his book,” Jack Hinson’s One Man War: A Civil War Sniper.” Hinson was a neutral plantation owner who was motivated by violence against his family to take a stand, engaging in guerilla warfare.
Until Union patrols moved in on his land, captured two of his sons and executed them on the roadside, Hinson held a uniquely neutral stance regarding the war. Friends with both Confederate and Union generals, Hinson did not take a side until the war became personal for him. At nearly 60 years old, he commissioned a special rifle designed for log-range accuracy and took to the wilderness for his revenge. As a sniper, Hinson became a deadly threat to the Union, single-handedly killing more than 100 Union soldiers
