Carmichael’s Bookstore and the Muhammad Ali Center host a discussion and book signing for civil rights attorney and author Jeffrey Hass tonight at the Muhammad Ali Center.  Jeffrey Haas is the author of the newly published book, ”The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther.” And while the title of the book speaks of the content, Jeffrey Haas is uniquely qualified to tell this story. He co-founded the People’s Law Office in Chicago during the tumultuous 1960s, and is one of the attorneys who pursued the court case against the Chicago Police and the FBI for over 14 years, ultimately winning a settlement of $1.85 million for the families of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the murders, and while the story has been told before in both a documentary film and the acclaimed PBS television series Eyes on the Prize, it remains an important event in our nation’s history and one all Americans should be aware of.
